RECENT EVENTS
Rain Gardens at Christa McAuliffe Park
Our president, James Havel, helped to plan and plant two rain gardens and a bio-filtration
basin at Christa McAuliffe park on Saturday, April 26. The rain garden planting was held along with a
clean-up of the park and rain barrel and composting demonstrations. (Press Gazette article) Along with Wild Ones, the City of Green Bay, Baird Creek Preservation Foundation, and UWGB were sponsors, and
volunteers braved the cold weather to participate in the Earth Day events. The plants are getting
established and greening up.
YMCA Healthy Kids Day
The YMCA Healthy Kids
event on May 3 was a big success! The kids had their choice of planting a wild petunia or making a bee
buzzer out of corks, popsicle sticks, and a rubber band. We explained to the children and their parents
that the flower is a native perennial they will enjoy for years to come with very little work. We also held
a drawing for four rain barrels which were donated to the Green Bay Wild Ones chapter. Thanks to Stone Silo Prairie Gardens for donating the flowers!
Clean-up of Trail
The Green Bay chapter sponsors approximately a one-mile section on the Mountain Bay trail. While picking up trash on May 21, we spotted bloodroot, cowslips, and other natives.
Planting at National Railroad Museum
On Wednesday, June 18, several of our members spent their time planting and watering a large variety of native plants at the entrance to the National Railroad Museum. Our club was contacted by the the director of the museum to get some help with incorporating natives into the landscape. They are looking to reduce the amount of time spent on maintaining a large lawn. We planted well over 200 plants; a gas-powered auger certainly helped with the very tough clay soil! A large portion of the plants were contributed by some members, and the rest where purchased by the museum.
