The Twin Cities chapter of the Wild Ones is a "hands-on" group and focuses on how to create a landscape with native plantings for gardeners at any skill level. Our gardens range in size from small areas of native plants in our yards up to full-blown prairies. The national Wild Ones group was formed in 1979, and the Twin Cities chapter held their first meeting in 2001. The local chapter provides a venue for educating members and sharing information about using plants adapted to our own soils and climate, rather than struggling to maintain exotic and sometimes invasive plantings. Become a member of Wild Ones and explore how to grow your own natural garden or yard full of native American plant species that provide wildlife habitat and a multitude of other benefits. We encourage visitors to join us one of our open-to-the-public events and hear firsthand about our group. As of the close of 2006, we have over 110 individual, household, and business memberships. See the membership page for more information about the benefits joining The Wild Ones. Events we sponsor include:

As we go green in our lives, many gardeners are also echoing the past with a more natural or native garden. Imagine walking through our area 150 years ago. What do you think you would find? This summer, Wild Ones member Julia Vanatta will lead a series of walking tours to help celebrate Nokomis Naturescape's first ten years. Those who walk with Julia will not only learn about the history of the gardens, they will also learn about the history of the other chain of lakes in Minneapolis: Rice Lake (Hiawatha), Lake Amelia (Nokomis) and Mother Lake. Talks will focus on changes to the landscape by both development in the area and entertainment trends. Nokomis Naturescape is a group of native plant demonstration gardens on the northeast corner of Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis. Public tours will be at intervals that follow the changes in the gardens from summer into fall. One hour talk and walking tour will be followed by a half hour of open discussion with the host. Tour dates: Sat., June 14, 9:30 - 11:00 am; Tues., July 8, 7:00 - 8:30 pm; Sat., July 26, 9:30 - 11:00 am; Tues., Aug. 19, 7:00 - 8:30 pm; and Sat., Sept. 13, 9:30 - 11:00 am. Meet near the intersection of E. 50th St. and Nokomis Pkwy. In the event of light rain or scattered showers, tours will not be rescheduled but will start inside the Nokomis Community Center, 2401 East Minneahaha Parkway. If severe weather is forecast two hours prior to the event, Tuesday events will be rescheduled for the following Thursday. Saturday events will be rescheduled for 2:00 pm Sunday. Tours are co-sponsored by Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (celebrating 125 years), Nokomis Naturescape, Nokomis East Neighborhood Associaction (NENA), and the Twin Cities Chapter of Wild Ones. For more information see the article in the May 2008 Twin Cities Chapter Newsletter or call NENA at 612-724-5652. 2008 Board Members Terms end on December 31st. We line up our leadership and committees for the coming year in November. Open positions can be filled anytime. Do consider sharing your interest by getting involved in one of these capacities. Help support the healthy continuation and growth of our chapter. Duties are flexible--if you think you can help in any way contact one of the people listed above. There is a strong core of former officers still very much involved in the group who will be happy to help anyone new coming on board. Meetings are held quarterly; they often involve food and always involve laughter. |

Nokomis Naturescape Prairie Gardens as a Sunny Native Garden Model: A Hands-On Experience
May Twin Cities Chapter Meeting - Free and open to the public
7:00 PM (set-up & socializing begins at 6:30 PM)
Nokomis Community Center, 2401 East Minnehaha Parkway, Minneapolis
The third program of the Twin Cities Chapter Spring Program Series
Three Ecosystems: How to Apply Nature's Lessons to Your Backyard
In the spring of 1998, the steep hillside southeast of the Nokomis Community Center was planted in grasses and wildflowers, and three perennial gardens, using only plants native to the area, were installed adjacent to Lake Nokomis.
Come celebrate Nokomis Naturescape’s 10-Year Anniversary by joining Vicki Bonk, Naturescape project shepherd, for a walk and talk around the prairie gardens. We will reflect on the 10 years of native plant gardening, see what is springing forth – both native desirables and weeds, (bring gloves – be prepared to edit!) and look forward to improving our gardens’ effectiveness as a model of sustainablity in 2008. Ideas and help welcome!
NOTE: The Twin Cities Chapter of the Wild Ones provides the principle garden volunteers for the hillside garden. New Nokomis Naturescape Gardeners are always welcome! Whether you come for one evening or many, any help is appreciated. This is a great opportunity to learn more about native plant gardening and/or impart your knowledge while contributing to the beauty and environmental health of the Lake Nokomis park.
